How to calculate your take-home pay

Working out take-home pay by hand takes about five minutes. Here is the order Revenue does it in, with worked examples for a €50,000 salary.

Step 1 — Apply pension relief

Pension contributions (within your age-based limit) come off your gross pay before Income Tax is calculated. They do not reduce USC or PRSI. On €50,000 with a 5% pension, that's €2,500 off the Income Tax base.

    Step 2 — Income Tax

    First €44,000 at 20% = €8,800. Remaining €3,500 at 40% = €1,400. Gross tax €10,200. Subtract personal + PAYE credits (€3,750 single) = €6,450 Income Tax payable.

    Step 3 — USC

    0.5% on the first €12,012 (€60), 2% on the next €16,688 (€333), 3% on €21,300 (€639). USC total = €1,032.

    Step 4 — PRSI

    4.2% of €50,000 = €2,100.

    Step 5 — Net pay

    €50,000 − €2,500 pension − €6,450 IT − €1,032 USC − €2,100 PRSI = €37,918 net. Divide by 12 for €3,160/month. The CentSmart Salary Calculator does this instantly and shows the band-by-band breakdown.
